Easter Eyes

We come to this Easter Season alive with the hope of spring.

We come to this Easter Season alive with the promise of an improving pandemic.

We come to this Easter Season alive with the good news of social progress on many fronts.

We come to this Easter Season rejoicing!

Easter truly is a time for optimism and, boy, how we stand in need of optimism!

There are many signs of unfolding goodness in the world this Easter Season, but it is important to remember that the first Easter and the Easter of 2021 both happen in a time when crucifixions still happen and too many still live in the tombs of their fears and their hatred.

And yet, that is why we are Easter people; resurrection people.

You see, the resurrection didn’t just happen to Jesus, it happened to the whole of humanity. We’re just not living it yet.

When we DO live it to the fullest, the realm of God that Christ came to proclaim will come to fruition.

Bringing that about starts with you. It starts with each one of us. It starts with having Easter eyes by which we see the world; to find and uncover the resurrection hidden in every disaster, to find and uncover the light in every darkness and the empty grave clothes in every still-sealed tomb.

An advocate for human unity, Klaus Hemmerle said this:

“I wish for each of us Easter eyes, able to perceive in death, life; in guilt, forgiveness; in separation, unity; in wounds, glory; in the human, God; in God, the human; and in the I, the you.”

Easter in 2021 truly does start with each one of us. It starts with embracing the new heart that is ours because of the resurrection. It starts with seeing the world as it should be and can be. It starts by having Easter eyes.

In Christ,
