This coming Sunday is Transfiguration Sunday. Not exactly the highest of holy days, but it does offer an important lesson: sometimes we need to just stop talking and pay attention.
The day highlights the story in Matthew’s gospel that recounts a hike that Jesus took. He went up on a high mountain and Peter, James, and John tagged along. There they are: up on a mountain when, suddenly, Jesus’ face shines like the sun! His clothes turn dazzling white, and—oh yeah—Moses and Elijah appear out of nowhere!
It’s a pretty strong hint that something important is happening.
But Peter, bless his heart, can’t just take it in. Instead of standing in awe, he immediately starts making plans: “Lord, this is great! Let’s build some tents for you, Moses, and Elijah!” Sure, because clearly, when you witness a mind-blowing supernatural event, your first thought should be camping.
Before Peter can finish, a cloud covers them, and God’s voice thunders, “This is my beloved Son… Listen to Him!” In other words: “Stop talking, Peter! Just listen.” This moment isn’t just about dazzling lights and famous biblical figures. It’s about learning to be quiet before God.
How often do we, like Peter, try to fill the silence with our own ideas instead of simply listening to Jesus? The Transfiguration reminds us that faith isn’t about having the perfect response or a great plan. It’s about hearing what Christ is trying to say to us.
So among other things, the Transfiguration is a good reminder that next time you feel the urge to jump in with your own ideas before seeking God’s wisdom, think of Peter on that mountain.
Maybe instead of rushing to set up tents, we should just sit still, watch, and listen for God’s presence before doing anything else.
See you in church,
