Lifeless Money

Money is a lifeless thing, isn’t it?

Try this: Take a dollar bill out of your wallet and put it on the table in front of you.  Come to think of it, more and more people don’t carry cash so you may need to put your credit card on the table in front of you. Same thing.

That money just sits there, lifeless, doesn’t it?  It doesn’t move, it doesn’t do anything.  It doesn’t get you anything.  It doesn’t help anybody or hurt anybody.  It just sits there; lifeless.

It’s only when you spend it or donate it that it comes alive.  How does it come alive?  Well, that’s up to you.  You can spend it on healthy food or junk food.  You can spend it on new clothes or to repair old clothes.  You can sock it away for retirement or to make sure you will have enough to pay next month’s bills.

You can also donate money.  That makes it come alive too and, here again, you have a choice.  You can donate money to a homeless person you pass on the street.  You can donate it to a political campaign.  You can donate it to a passion you have like an animal shelter or cancer research.

You are the one who has the power to transform money from a lifeless thing into something that is alive and active in the world.  And how you do that is your choice.

How do you make that choice?  Hopefully, you make your choices based on your values and there is no better place to clarify those values and activate those values than through a community of faith like First Congregational Church.

Week by week here at our church, you enter into a deeper relationship with God in such a way that you come to understand yourself and this world in more meaningful ways.

But it doesn’t stop there.  Here you also have ways of supporting and participating in ministries that magnify compassion and justice in our community, not to mention being a part of a caring community of people who have your back when things get tough.  Our church is a place where we explore, learn, and grow in faith together.

This Sunday we begin our Fall Stewardship Campaign.  If there is one thing that our faith teaches us it is that dead and lifeless things can be restored to life.  This is a truth that also applies to money.

Money, as lifeless as it is, can be brought alive through the ministries of our church in inspiring ways when you give generously to our Operating Fund for 2025.

This fall’s Campaign is a fantastic opportunity to mix your faith and your choices with positive energy and creative programming as we plan for another great year of ministry together!

See you in church,

Rev. Dominic
