Pushing Your Thoughts Around

There was a little girl who was having a very bad week. Then one day, her mood improved and her days were going much better. Her mother asked what changed things for her and she said:

“Well, yesterday my thoughts were pushing me around. Today I’m pushing them around.”

Who’s running your life?  That’s a big question really, and our natural tendency is to answer: “Well, I am of course.”  But are you really at the helm? Take a look at your weekly schedule.  Maybe your time is so blocked out that the element of choice has been largely removed from your days.

Add to that the stress and worry about local, national, and world events and it is easy to “have your thoughts push you around”.  It is easy to feel like there is just too much to deal with and that you are at the mercy of your thoughts and worries.

Maybe it is time to start pushing your thoughts around instead of having them push you around.  Maybe a dose of “you know what?  I’m actually in charge of what I’m going to dwell on and it’s not this” might help.

Our faith and your daily spirituality can certainly help with this.  Our faith teaches us that we are not in this life to get crushed by events and circumstances.  We are not here to wander aimlessly around, doing our best to just support ourselves and the people around us.

We are here to find a sense of peace and purpose.  To accomplish this, we are not left to ourselves.  We have our church community and, most importantly, we have the spirit of Christ to guide us each and every day.

Christ is with you each moment to guide you back to what is truly important and meaningful.  Or put it this way:  when it comes to pushing your own thoughts around, Christ is stronger than you and he invites you to lean on him!

May these coming summer months be a time when your spirituality is enriched by a break from your usual routine such that you can, with God’s help, become more grounded and centered in who you are.

See you in church,
