What do you expect will happen today?
You probably have a list of things that need to get done today, tomorrow, and outward on the calendar. Appointments that need to be kept, places to be.
As you go about doing these things, however, what do you expect will happen? Will things go well? Will things fall apart? Most of us would say: “Well, I hope things go well!”
Expecting, however, is different than hoping. Hoping can have the connotation of removing your agency. That is, I can’t control anything so “I hope” things go well.
Expectation is different. Expectation has more to do with choice. You can choose to expect good things to happen or bad things to happen. And even when bad things do happen, you can choose to expect some newness on the other side of whatever occurred.
It matters what you expect. Positive expectations draw positivity your way. Negative expectations draw negativity your way.
Expectation is, therefore, an act of faith. The reason you should choose to have positive expectations about your day (and your life for that matter!) is because you belong to God and God is the source of all positivity and goodness. You come from and return to something that is far beyond the outcome of each day or the challenges of this life.
Whether you recognize it or not, you have a unity with the loving source of the universe itself. That source of all life strews gifts upon your path every day. Without the right expectation, you will miss them entirely.
Given how much God values you, shouldn’t you set your expectations accordingly?
See you in church,
