The Cone of Uncertainty

Like many of you, I have been anxiously watching the news each day this week to see the latest update on the track of Hurricane Lee.

I reached a point where I needed to stop looking, though, because one minute it looked like the storm would wander away from us and the next minute we were right in the bull’s eye.

And then there is the dreaded “cone of uncertainty”.  It may be that the storm will miss us, BUT, we can’t be completely sure; meaning that we are still in the “cone of uncertainty” in which the hurricane may still come directly upon us.

In many ways, we live our whole lives in a cone of uncertainty.  Whether it is a health issue, a relationship issue, or a job issue, we can never be completely sure if we will be fine or if we will take a direct hit.

But here’s the thing: the best we can do is prepare and trust.  While we are pretty good at preparing, it is that second feature that we struggle with: trust.

Like it or not, there are things (many things) that are outside of our control.  That is where our faith comes in.  Our faith tells us that the best possible outcome or the worst possible outcome can never alter God’s eternal companionship with us.  Our faith tells us that no storm lasts forever and when the wind, rain, and waves die down, we will find our way forward because we are loved, we are guided, and we are upheld no matter what may come our way.

Because, you see, there is also a “cone of certainty.”  It is that place on the satellite map of eternity where we all live; a place where we are sure to be bombarded by the light and love of a God whose power and presence puts even the biggest hurricane to shame.

See you in church,
